Make a Splash comes to Harris Academy Merton

Tuesday 03 January 2012 at 15:29

Make a Splash, the Mayor of London's Olympic legacy programme is about to commence in the London Borough of Merton for the first time at the Harris Academy Merton.

Over the Christmas holidays, the build team has been busy assembling the 12 metre x 6 metre mobile steel tank pool within a marquee on the playground at the front of the school.

The project itself will start delivery on 9th January and run throughout the spring term until 30th March.

As well as being funded by the Mayor of London and the programme sponsors MWB Business Exchange and Variety Club, this project has been made to happen through financial support of local partners.

NHS South West London have commissioned PRO-ACTIVE South London, the County Sports Partnership for the South London sub region, to deliver a programme of activities to increase sport and physical activity levels in Sutton and Merton in the build up to, during and post 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Christine Double, Director of PRO-ACTIVE South London said: “We are delighted to be commissioned by NHS South West London to deliver the Active Celebration. Research shows that only 10 per cent of Sutton and Merton residents are active enough to benefit their health. It is our aim to harness the power of the Olympic and Paralympics games and get more people active.”

Further funding support has been provided by Merton Council.

School swimming programmes will be delivered on weekdays, and the pool is open to the wider community on weekday evenings and on Saturdays mornings. Community sessions are only £2 per person, and can be booked by calling Community Swimming on 0844 736 9047.
