Make a Splash for Free this Summer in Camden!

Tuesday 31 July 2012 at 14:36

The Make a Splash mobile pool at Maria Fidelis School in Camden is staying at the school for Summer 2012.

It has been at the school since April with an exciting programme of swimming lessons for schools and the local community.

And what’s more, all swimming sessions at the pool this summer are now free of charge!

The pool at Maria Fidelis Lower School on North Gower Street was due to be taken down on 7th July, but with additional funding from Camden Council and NHS North Central this has now been extended until 23rd August.

Sessions for the community have been available at only £2 each, but since 23rd July, all sessions have been free of charge as part of a wider free swimming initiative offered by Camden Council and partners, Greenwich Leisure Limited, Parliament Hill Lido and Central YMCA. The initiative is funded by NHS North Central London.

The brough's free Swimming initiative aims to get everyone active in its pool this Summer. The offer will run in Camden throughout August and September allowing free swimming opportunities during designated times.

In conjunction with this, NHS North Central London has supported the ‘Make a Splash’ programme at Maria Fidelis to make all sessions free of charge.

Councillor Siddiq said:

“Swimming offers a range of health benefits and is a great activity for all ages. We are pleased that the programme at Maria Fidelis has been extended this Summer and will be part of the wider Free Swimming initiative. This is a great opportunity and we hope that many residents will take to the water this Summer.”

So far, hundreds of people have benefitted from the out of school hours community programme, and it is hoped many more people will choose to access the pool over the summer.

On every weekday, the pool is open from 10am until 3pm, with evening openings until 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is also open on Saturday mornings from 9am to 1pm.

There is no need to book these sessions in advance, with places being allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Chris Cooper, Make a Splash Programme Manager said:

"Maria Fidelis Lower School is located within 5 minutes walk of Euston Station, so it is a great location, easily accessible for thousands of people. Our mobile pool is provides a fantastic environment to learn to swim or simply enjoy being in the water this summer.

"I would encourage people from Camden to take advantage of this pool over the summer holidays, and I’d like o thanks Camden Council and NHS Camden for supporting this project."

Make a Splash is one of the Mayor of London’s sports legacy projects, designed to provide opportunities for people of all ages to access sport as a legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
