Tuesday 10 July 2012 at 13:32

A group of lucky Tottenham children took the plunge today with two of Britain’s most successful swimming stars in an innovative open air portable pool that has been built in the playground at Devonshire Hill Primary School.

The Make a Splash pool got the official seal of approval from former Olympic swimming champion Duncan Goodhew and six -time Commonwealth medallist, Melanie Marshall, who hosted a special master class for children in the pool.

Goodhew said: “I’m really excited to be in Tottenham at this fantastic temporary pool. It’s a really impressive facility which will make a big difference to the community.

“Swimming is an extremely important life skill to learn and it’s also great fun. I’d like to encourage everyone to come down to Devonshire Hill Primary School to enjoy the pool while it’s here.”

The 12 x 6m pool has been provided by Make a Splash as part of the Mayor of London’s Olympic Sports Legacy Fund and is an initiative of Team London - the Mayor of London’s volunteer programme - and Haringey Council.

It is also supported by British Gas, the ASA and Thames Water.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "With the Olympic and Paralympic Games just around the corner I want to see Londoners of all ages and abilities taking advantage of this fantastic facility.

“Make a Splash is part of my ongoing effort to ensure a lasting sporting legacy from the Games by bringing top class facilities to communities across London. Now that the mobile pool has come to Tottenham, I’d urge people to check it out and take the plunge ahead of this summer like no other.”

Volunteer Coordinator for Team London Stephanie Kamin said:  "We're really grateful to Devonshire Hill Primary School for agreeing to host the community swimming pool, which will bring a host of fun swimming activities to the local community throughout the summer.”

British Gas, which today officially announced its sponsorship of Make a Splash, has been supporting swimming at all levels in Britain for the last three years, with a strong emphasis on getting more people to swim.

British Gas Brand Director, Susie Plume said: “British Gas is passionate about getting the nation swimming so we’re very excited to be involved with Make a Splash and bringing swimming to the community in Tottenham.

“During the three years of our partnership with British Swimming we have seen the benefits and enjoyment that swimming can bring to communities. I hope that everyone will have a fantastic time in the pool at Devonshire Hill Primary School this summer.”

The temporary pool has been installed by Total Swimming and will provide a range of sessions designed to get the whole community involved. It opened on 14th June and will be on site until 6th September.

Sessions are just £2 each, and can be booked through Community Swimming on 0844 736 9047.
